Blogging the Bachelor: Season 21, Episode 3

Dear Mimi,

It’s Tuesday in January, so you know what that means! Another installment of Blogging the Bachelor. Let’s see what is to be continued from last week.

Ignoring the crime show like “previously on The Bachelor”, right off the bat, Kristina and Whitney (look how great I’m getting with names!) and some other girls discuss what happened last night (aka his history with Liz). Oh jeez, they’re about to have a rose ceremony! I totally forgot they were going to have one of those. I was expecting them to just continue with the last group date. Anyway, there is a rose ceremony, and Nick comes in and explains the whole situation to all the girls. He claims that he’s an open book, but I’ve seen him quiver last week, so that’s questionable.

Screen Shot 2017-01-17 at 3.28.24 PM.png

Literally Nick

Blah, blah, blah, the girls are still discussing all of this with each other, and with Nick, so really nothing interesting here. Just a lot of disappointing build-up from ABC. Lacey (camel girl), however, brought up how Nick’s situation is similar to Andi and Kaitlyn, which they didn’t show the rest of, but I wish they had. At this point, it seems like Nick is just over talking about this whole thing, but that’s the only thing the girls are talking about it. Meanwhile, Nick and Danielle L. have a great conversation and even those on the moon can see that Nick is really nervous when he’s talking to her.

Oh look who’s back. It’s Corinne. Yay. Corrine is mad that someone else slept with Nick before her (yo dude, I’m pretty sure that list has a lot more girls than just Liz. He’s 35). And instead of being classy and just wearing a dress, well, let’s just say she’s only wearing a jacket so she can one-up everyone else. Are we secretly in a Nintendo Mario game during this rose ceremony?

Blogging the Bachelor: Season 21, Episode 2

Dear Mimi,

Let’s just dive right in (is Alexis rubbing off on me?).

Screen Shot 2017-01-11 at 1.51.41 AM.png

This should have been her opening line.

Tonight on the Bachelor…there’s a helicopter ride, something with wedding dress, a ferris wheel, and oh goody, lots and lots of drama. Nick’s biggest fear is already that this is gonna blow up in his face and some girl slaps him (Josephine I think?).

First off, Corinne toasts to Nick and everyone is so excited that they can’t sleep. They all gush about Nick. Josephine is bursting with excitement. Now they’re just waiting for the date card besides all yelling Nick’s name in unison.

Right on cue, we get Chris Harrison. He explains how this works. There’s 2 group dates and 1 one-on-one date. He also states that not everyone will get a date this week, so aka no useless tears while complaining about time. First group date: Corinne, Vanessa, Sarah, Alexis, Hailey, Lacey, Brittany, Jasmine, Raven, Danielle L., Taylor, and Elizabeth W. Corinne goes “I’ve never been a bridesmaid”, probably because she doesn’t have that many friends. She also states she’d marry Nick today if she could. Girl, you barely know him. Hug tokens don’t lead to marriage.

Screen Shot 2017-01-11 at 1.53.54 AM.png

Literally an inner working of Corinne’s brain at this point.

They reach the venue and they all start running but I don’t think they know where they’re going. Lacey says that Nick could wear a potato sack and still look good. Ehh, debatable. Nick pretty much tells the girls that these dates are weird so have fun and don’t take it seriously. Wow, this is much more needed than you would think. They’re talking wedding photos today, so ha! Thing is though they’re all assigned a type of bride. Vanessa is the 80s bride, Alexis is a shotgun bride, and Brittany is an Adam and Eve bride so she only gets an underwear to wear?! How classy and non-demeaning. Everyone else is alas, a bridesmaid. And then of course, with no time for formalities, the drama begins. Corinne goes on and on about how she’s not wearing that much and she’s the hottest bride and how she’s already kissed Nick, and Taylor gets offended, saying she think Corinne is trying to psyche her out and girl, it’s already working. Next Brittany steps into the room half-naked and you can see Corinne’s face go from 100 to 0, real quick. There’s more than one problem going on here already.

And now time for the photos. We have an elopement marriage with Sarah, which is all kinds of weird, then we have a Biker wedding with Hailey, which why would anyone want that, then a shotgun wedding with Alexis, which OMG why is everything with this girl so cringey, then the 1980’s bride crew with Vanessa, which was one of the better shoots. Jasmine G., is already complaining and she kisses Nick. Umm hello, you’re the bridesmaid, not the bride. Danielle L., has the traditional wedding and she looks stunning. Everyone is kissing Nick now, but Lacey definitely takes the cake. She exclaims “tastes like Danielle” when Lacey kisses Nick after Danielle does and I just feel like it can’t get any weirder than that.

Project Pan 2017

Dear Mimi,

As we’ve all fully established that I have way too much makeup (and enough extras for the next 2 years), I have decided to give myself a challenge. Introducing my Project Pan for 2017!

I first saw this idea on YouTube and thought it was such a clever idea. It’s a great way to make sure you are using up the products instead of wasting them, throwing them away, having them expire, or just letting them sit there on your shelf for God knows how long.

I have so many products that I would like to get to using up just so I feel like I didn’t waste my money buying them. Everyone does this challenge a little differently, so here are my rules:

  1. There will be 15 products I have to try and “hit pan on”.
  2. I cannot go out and buy more makeup of that category until I finish the product, unless I absolutely need it. For example, when I finish my current foundation, I can go out and buy another one since I won’t have one anymore. But, unless I finish a lipstick, I cannot go out and buy another one since I have way too many already (exemptions will be made for limited edition products IF I absolutely truly need to have it).
  3. For powder products, I just have to hit pan to complete the challenge (this will be hard enough since there’s usually more product and I don’t wear makeup everyday). For all other types of products, I need to finish them, unless otherwise stated.
  4. Some products I don’t have to finish because there’s way too much of it, but I do have to try my best to complete my goal, which I will outline.

Without further ado, here are the products I will try to finish by the end of 2017:

2016 Favorite Finds (with Emojis!)

Dear Mimi,

2016, although crappy in general, was great for beauty. So many new and fantastic products came out and this is the year when I really got into makeup and I figured out what thing were, when to use them, and how. My skincare regimen also paid off and I found some products for life! Brace yourself, it’s going to be a long post, so I’ve separated them into categories. I won’t go into too much explanation for each product, mainly just emoji ratings with a brief explanation, so just know I love all of them haha. Check out my October, November, and December favorites or Internet Made Me Buy It for more explanations, if mentioned.

Makeup:

Primers

Tarte Timeless Smoothing Primer ($39 for 0.5 oz): 😁 So soft and creamy, foundation goes on flawlessly with this primer.

screen-shot-2016-12-29-at-11-13-50-pm

Laura Geller Spackle Primer ($32 for 2 oz): 😎 I didn’t have high hopes for this primer at first, but it works so well! Every time I use it, I love it even more. It’s so light and moisturizing, and makes my foundation last wonderfully.

screen-shot-2016-12-29-at-11-18-07-pm

Smashbox Photofinish Primer ($36 for 1 oz): 😊 This primer is more silicone-y, but really smooths my face and makes it even for the foundation to adhere to.

screen-shot-2016-12-29-at-11-19-23-pm

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion ($20): 😋 My go to eyeshadow primer. The only thing that I don’t like about it (and I’ve only noticed it the last few times) is that it will crinkle and crease when it accidentally transfers under my eyes, on top of my concealer. It leaves a mark which emphasizes my dry spots and looks super weird. It doesn’t go away that easily either. But use this before doing your face makeup and it’s great for eyeshadows!

Smashbox 24 Hour Eyeshadow Primer ($21): 😙 Found this recently, but I love it! Really lightweight, no creasing, and makes all the discoloration on your eyes go away for a clean canvas.

The Marshmallow Test

Dear Mimi,

Let’s just get this out of the way. 2016 sucked. Sure there were a few good things scattered here or there, but the majority of it was just crappy.

But life isn’t all good things. There are ups and downs, good and bad. Some years were better than others, and unfortunately, 2016 wasn’t one of them.

Personally, 2016 was rough. There were some very depressing family issues I had to deal with, and some members I didn’t get to see at all. It’s astonishing to think that sometimes these issues were there all along, but the innocence and liveliness of childhood does such a dang good job of masking them. Seeing all of these things in a new light made me wish I wasn’t getting older. It wasn’t that things didn’t work themselves out, they did, but I didn’t get to be a part of it like I had hoped for so long.

Then, my career plans came to a standby. Again, it was a test of patience. I got into medical school, but not the one I wanted. I had to question and re-question whether it was something I really wanted to do. I had to take another year off and apply again since the school offered me a spot for Fall 2017. Some people rejected me for choosing to follow my dreams. It was so bizarre for me. Everything I had planned out so perfectly the year before was thrown back at me in my face and fell at my feet. As a Type-A personality, this was the hardest thing for me to swallow.

After that, I had to face realities with places close to my heart, countries I thought would always welcome me with open arms. This year I learned that majority of the world chooses to hate instead of love, chooses to separate instead of combine, chooses to destroy instead of build up. Whether I went back to my parents’ home country, or stayed in mine, I felt isolated and on edge, that someone might say something, that something might happen. Neither place felt like home anymore and neither place completed me, when once upon a time, both did.

And finally, for the first time in my life, I had my heart cracked, if not broken. I gave someone my heart who did not want it, and sometimes, if I’m being honest, I still think about what life would be like if he had just given me a chance. But more than that, even the rishta process was exhausting. In the past 12 months, I’ve had 18 rishtas. It’s not fun, it never was. I hate going through these profiles, one after the other, like I’m buying a house or a new car. At this point, my heart not only has walls around it, but an army guarding its safety. I just wish someone would be brave, strong, smart, and kind enough to break through everything and take care of it forever.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Walter Mischel, a professor at Stanford, conducted an experiment, which has been repeated many times over. The premise is very simple. You give a child a marshmallow and give them 2 options: 1) they could eat it now, or 2) if they waited until you came back, they would get another marshmallow provided they hadn’t eaten the first one already. One treat now, or two treats later. Keep in mind that these children don’t know how long it will be til the adult comes back. It seems like a very easy test, but the results were astounding. After continuing to do long term follow ups and analysis, Mischel found that children who waited for the second marshmallow proved to be more intelligent and successful in life. They had higher test scores, lower obesity rates, better social skills, and higher paying jobs.

Similarly, our whole lives are a series of marshmallow tests. God is always testing us and life is full of curveballs. But, if we are patient, things will get better. Yet, patience is not just about waiting. It’s about trusting in God’s plan and having a positive attitude while waiting. A lot of the kids who waited trusted the researcher that better things were coming and found ways to keep themselves occupied whilst waiting. We have to keep going, actively trying to better ourselves and have faith that good things are coming. Without hope, we have no purpose, nothing to look forward to. It’s said time and time again, however cliché it may sound: good things come to those who wait.

Overall, 2016 was filled with many sleepless nights and even more tears. I worried I would fall back into depression, and sometimes, I got really close. But this year also strengthened my relationship with God. For the first time in a while, I had to trust Him with every ounce of my being and rely on Him completely, which I’m trying my level best to do. And who can be any better to trust than the One who knows what’s coming? He’s the One that has a plan, the One that makes no mistakes, and the One that knows the reason for everything.

Keep on trekking Mimi. I have faith 2017 will bring 2 marshmallows.

Love,

Didi

This Time Next Year

This Time Next Year…

Dear Mimi,

With 2016 being a mediocre year for almost everyone, maybe it’s time to wake up and really get to know ourselves. Sometimes we get so caught up in others and the world around us, that we forget to self-reflect and really understand who we are as people on the most individual level.

That’s why, for 2017, I invested in this book.

screen-shot-2016-12-30-at-12-30-05-pm

You can get it at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or even Target, and it’s just under $10.

I’ll be starting it tomorrow, December 31, 2016, and it contains 365 journal prompts, one for each day, that will make you look deep down inside yourself, face your fears, reaffirm what you believe in, question your thoughts, and understand your desires.

I’m hoping that throughout 2017, I’ll continue to grow and that this time next year, December 31, 2017, I’ll have a new perspective on myself, so 2018 and beyond, I can live my best life.

Love,

Didi

Didi’s Delightful and Disastrous! December 2016

Dear Mimi,

This is it. We’re saying goodbye to 2016. And honestly? I couldn’t be happier.

These are the products I used a lot specifically in December, but check out my 2016 Favorite Finds (out tomorrow!) for all the products I loved during the whole of 2016.

#RishtaRoulette: Age is but a Number

~So this was actually the dude’s mom, who stopped me as I was coming down the stairs at a banquet. Keep in mind I have no cahoots as to who this lady was. My friend and I were descending the stairs after sneaking up to get some pizza. This is the only time pizza has failed me.~

Her: You look so pretty dear.

Me: Thank you Auntie. *proceeds to keep going down the stairs*

Her: Wait, I want your mom’s number. I want you to marry my son.

Me: *extremely weirded out* My mom is actually in India right now (this was true).

Her: It’s okay, I can call her when she gets back. When is she coming back?

Me: No Auntie. Thank you very much, but I’m too young now. (I was 18).

Her: Nonsense. 18 is a perfect age to get married. My son isn’t that old either. He’s only 28.

Rishta Report: What Aunties Don’t Tell You

Dear Mimi,

Welcome to my new little tid-bit, Rishta Report. As I continue to go thru this tumultuous journey that Nani is convinced is actually one of the best things I can do, might as well share them all with you, so that you know what to expect when you’re older. Or you can wallow with me in your misfortune when your time comes. Either one, your choice.

Starting now, I’ll “report” (see what I did there) on the ups and (hopefully not many) downs of this process, and we’ll see how it goes. Better than being on ‘The Bachelor’, right?

Rishta Report: What the Aunties Don’t Tell You

Once you hit 20, all the aunties automatically know. It’s like they have an alarm so that they know when they can start pestering you about getting married. Where these alarms are, I have yet to find out. But when I do, I will destroy them all. I promise.

screen-shot-2016-12-06-at-2-23-55-pm

Anyway, so now all the aunties are telling you how great it is to be married and automatically deem themselves the matchmaker lady of the world, so they’re all throwing these guys at you and you’re just existing, feeling like this:

Screen Shot 2016-12-06 at 2.41.14 PM.png

I swear to you, it’s in the auntie handbook. Page 1: ‘First Rule of Being an Auntie: Encourage marriage at all opportunities. Heck, don’t even wait for an opportunity. Just bring it up always and often. And continuously have different rishtas to suggest’. There you go.

Struggles of Perfume Hunting

Dear Mimi,

After I decided I have enough makeup for 3 lifetimes (which I later realized looking at other people’s collections that I am still impoverished in makeup, relatively), I decided to dedicate my efforts to another obsession: parfums.

Literally my only perfumes were an Adidas toilette that I received 2 years ago and a Victoria’s Secret rollerball. Part of adulting is finding some good scents Mimi and I was severely lacking in that department.

So I set out to find some more fragrances yet and it was way, way, wayyyyyyyyy harder than I imagined.

I started off doing the logical thing, in my opinion. I ordered a sampler kit from Sephora, which contained 8 samples of the most popular fragrances from this year. Here’s what was included and what I thought of them using emojis (which if you read my October & November favorites, you would already know some):

  • Angel by Thierry Mugler: 😷😷😷😷😷
    • This just smelled like BO mixed with Lysol in a bottle
  • YSL Mon Paris: 😍😍😍😍😍
    • A very girly scent, it’s a mix of fruity & floral. Smells very princess-y.
  • Marc Jacobs Divine Decadence: 🙂🙂🙂
    • This is a very elegant fragrance which smelled like your classic department store perfume.
  • My Burberry Black: ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
    • I can’t quite describe the notes in this, but it was very muted, yet confident and sensual. Definitely liked it better than the original My Burberry.
  • Tom Ford Orchid Soleil: 😊😊😊😊
    • It smelled like orchids, which was nice and it had a sweet undertone. I quite enjoyed this.
  • Elizabeth and James Nirvana Rose:🤕🤕🤕
    • This was just meh. It was very spicy, with a little bit of sweet, but it didn’t appeal to me.
  • Elizabeth and James Nirvana Bourbon: 😓😓😓😓
    • No. While I liked it eons over Angel, I hate the smell of Bourbon, which is exactly what this smelled like.
